How about that for a question hey??

Before I discuss this, let me explain why I thought of it.

We are all well aware that the Internet Marketing industry contains enough hype to make Audley Harrison look like a recluse!! You know the hype I mean –

“I was a millionaire overnight”

“I used to own a bike now I own a £10 Million yaught”

“I haven’t done a minute of work in 10 years, let me show you how!!”

So with that in the back of my mind, I hit the gym like I do every day at around 3:00pm before it gets busy.

Now, for those of you who don’t know, I’m a big kid and have never really “grown up” (as Alex puts it) when it comes to my music taste so I am going to pre warn you….

I AM ABOUT TO TALK ABOUT HIP HOP

For those of you who like anything played with an instrument you are going to have to bear with me!!

So I am running on the treadmill as I do every day, trying to beat my best time (I will never lose that competitive edge!!) and I am listening to Jay Z. While listening to one of the greatest musicians on the planet (Time to turn that blind eye people!!) He stated the following:

“I would rather be underpaid than over rated”

Of course that got me really thinking and I have to be honest, to begin with I was a little hesitant!

You see, here’s the thing: We are ALL in it for a financial gain. I would say that is a stone wall fact. Yeah ok, some may have more prevalent motivations like time freedom or independence but somewhere on that list money will ALWAYS crop up.

It’s safe to say that if we surveyed the entire Internet Marketing community, I would guess that 60% of the honest people would admit to money being their number one motivation.

So where am I going with this?

Well here’s what over rated means to me in our industry…

Someone who creates a fictional character or presence to use to their advantage.

You know the people I mean, the guy who hires a Ferrari for the day and videos/photographs himself with it for his websites!! The woman who buys a testimonial from someone claiming to have been helped by her! (I really have seen that before by the way!)

Guess what? THEY ARE OVERRATING THEMSELVES!!!

But here’s where it gets even more interesting…

You aren’t going to want to hear this but… by doing this they may actually make more money!! How crazy is that????

People buy success and it can be all too tempting to lie in order to achieve.

BUT

There is no sustainability in doing this. You see, people ALWAYS find out. The more presence these people get, the more exposure they have, the more open they leave themselves. All it takes is to be exposed online for these ridiculous fabrications and you can kiss bye bye to your business and reputation!!

When building a business online and branding you, ask yourself one simple question.

“Would I rather be overrated or under paid?”

I can guarantee you that less is more in the long run and by choosing the right answer you will guarantee yourself a long, sustainable and highly profitable business.

One that leaves you to hold your head very high!!

(Incase you were wondering Jay Z spurred me on to a 5km time of 24.44 and I am growing ever so closer to my 20 min target!!!)

A True Story That Needs Sharing

Ok, so every now and again I come across life changing stories that need sharing and this one is the best I have ever heard. The beauty of this story is that I inadvertently had a huge part in how it played out!!

It all started 10 months ago when I received a call from a really depressed guy by the name of Andrew.

From the onset I could tell that this guy was not in a good place, he sounded depressed and like the world was on his shoulders!!

The first sentence pretty much summed him up:

“I was a lorry driver travelling up and down the country delivering food for Tescos. While up in Manchester I went to the local pub for a couple of beers before making the long trip down to Devon”

I could already sense what was coming….

“Two pints later I left and got back in the lorry for the journey, only to be crashed into by a motorbike upon pulling out. Of course the police were called and then came the breathalyzer”

“Needless to say, I failed and was arrested for drink driving. As if that wasn’t enough, the motorbike driver ended up suing me”

Well the story wasn’t getting any better and if I’m completely honest I wasn’t really sure where this was going!

“I ended up losing my license, and therefore my job. I also lost in court and was ordered to pay £18,000 in damages to the motorbike driver”

“So now I am jobless, penniless and my wife left me last week and has moved to Cyprus. What can you do for me??”

It was at this point that two things occurred:

1) I felt like Jeremy Kyle!!

2) I realised that the way things were, Andrew was only going in one direction and that was down!

Now, at the time I didn’t realise how important what I was about to say was, little did I know how effective the right advice can be.

My reply to this was simple:

“I’m sorry if this appears rude Andrew, but you really have to sort yourself out and actually take control of your current situation! And to answer your question, I can’t do anything for you. The only person who can sort you out is…… YOU”

(It’s not the first time I have said this and it sure as hell won’t be the last)

With that Andrew apologised for wasting my time (He didn’t at all but I didn’t have a chance to tell him that) and he hung up on me.

I would love to tell you that I left that call feeling guilty and worried about this guy but if I am completely honest with you… I didn’t!! I speak with many people each week, some of them happy some of them sad, some of them positive, some of them depressed but the one rule I apply to them all is that at any one time, they can take control and pick life up by the reigns.

Just a simple change in mindset is all it takes to make a fundamental difference in ones life.

Bloody hell, if I CAN DO IT… ANYONE CAN!!!

So that was the end of my short but sweet call with Andrew and the end of our short but sweet relationship….. HOW WRONG I WAS!!!

4 months later I get a call from Andrew again…

“You may not recognise me but I am the guy who cried down the phone to you and you were the guy who told me to get over it and sort myself out” (Well not in those words but I’ll run with it!!)

“I would like to personally thank you for your advice and would absolutely love the chance to meet you”

I was totally mystified now so out of pure curiosity I met up with him a week later at a local bar to me.

It turns out that Andrew had quite literally taken my words and acted upon them! He quickly declared himself bankrupt, taking the educated decision that it had to get worse before it got better. He settled out of court with the motorbike rider having sold his prized possession (His lorry). He had found a new girlfriend. And he went on holiday with her for a week to get his head right.

On return he did two things:

1) Invested money in an educational ebay product teaching how to earn an income using the popular site

2) Got a job as a part time cleaner with a local cleaning business

Within two months he had generated enough money to put a deposit down on a rental property (He had been living with his son). Another month passed and he earned enough money to go full time with it and quit his cleaning job.

Once full time things went even better financially and he was now fully self sufficient, working from home and using the internet/ebay to really make a difference.

Then came the meeting.

He was meeting with me not to talk about his past, but to discuss his future. Obviously he had seen how powerful the Internet had been simply by buying and selling on Ebay. Now he wanted to get involved with Internet Marketing and wanted to work with me.

Did I mention he also wanted to hand me £4,000 in cash for “Turning his life around”?

Well needless to say I wouldn’t take it and needless to say I didn’t deserve it…

IT WAS ALL HIM!!

Yes I told him to stop whining (Not my words but we’ll run with it) but he went out there and took simple, educated steps to sort his life out and sat there at the bar with me he was in the best position he had ever been in.

The next steps to the story are obvious, we now work closely together (He is one of my top earners) and believe it or not, he helped my business… explaining the pleasures of buying and selling on Ebay!!

So why has this story come to light now rather than at any point in the last 10 months?

Andrew is expecting a baby boy and phoned me to tell me the news….

HERE’S THE MORAL TO THIS STORY….

We’ve all done things that we regret…

Why Did I Do This???

But the key to all of this is the ability to pick ones self up and apply a bit of focus and hard work. There will literally be tones of people reading this in situations they can relate to Andrew.

The only difference between you and him will be the actions you take having established your problem.

AND ONE MORE THING…

You don’t have to be in a bad situation to get involved with online marketing. We work with businesses, successful and wealthy people, people who want to add to their income, people who want to replace their income… it doesn’t matter. My favourite thing about Internet Marketing is that there is no divide, no elitist attitude towards people who are not as fortunate as the next person. As long as you have a computer and internet access you have the tools to make money.

The common link is the willingness to learn and the ability to take control.

Well done to Andrew, I salute you, and I also salute anyone else out there who had the kahuna’s to act on someone’s advice and work bloody hard to make a difference…

P.S. ANDREW ISN’T AN ONLINE MILLIONAIRE, HE DIDN’T GET RICH QUICK AND HE CERTAINLY DOESN’T WATCH MONEY POUR INTO HIS BANK ACCOUNT WITHOUT DOING ANY WORK!!! HE EARNS A VERY HEALTHY INCOME, IS HIS OWN BOSS AND IN HIS OWN WORDS “I TAKE NOTHING FOR GRANTED AND WORK BLOODY HARD EACH DAY IM ALIVE!!”

After an excited hello from Martyn our team member, we got to the bottom of his excitement… He had just earned more in a week than he had in an entire month in his previous job.

He asked us if we fancied a round of golf and many will know that Alex and I are unable to say no to that question so … IN THE DIARY IT WENT!!

It was only during the golf that Martyn realised what he had let himself in for!!

If there is one thing Alex and I LOVE (more than golf) it is the enthusiasm of a marketer who has experienced fantastic success…. naturally we capitalised on it =

The Much Anticipated SFM Golf Day

Yesterday was the very first (Of many to come) SFM golf day.

From the big six figure earners such as myself and Stuart right down to marketing newbies it was a great way to catch up both socially and on a business level!

We also had a 3 course meal in the evening which gave us a chance to talk business and plans moving forward.

Unleash The ‘Guru’ In You!!

I’m going to tell you two different stories and then I’m going to get to my point… (Ass about face like usual!!)

Story A

David is sat at the table following a meeting with his Mentor.

To give you a bit of background on David; he is an ex hairdresser who worked too hard, didn’t earn enough and decided to get himself involved with an Internet Marketing company, and subsequently, a self proclaimed Guru.

“What’s wrong?” Asks his girlfriend

“I just met up with my Guru and to be honest, things didn’t go great” He replied.

(For those of you who are not quite registering what I mean by the word ‘Guru’ I am talking about the kind that work closely with you to help you build your business and profit from it)

“I don’t understand, what is it he has done?” Said David’s girlfriend.

“Well” replied David, “I just had my hopes set on the fact that my ‘Guru’ was going to take me where I wanted to go but it really isn’t turning out that way!!”

Story B

Vicky is sat at home with her boyfriend watching desperate housewives (Not that I would ever know about that programme)

“That is just depressing” She moans…

“What now?” Sighs her long standing boyfriend (I’m definitely not speaking from experience here….)

“I will NEVER have toned legs like that and a flat stomach”
“Not with an attitude like that you won’t” He laughs and then asks her what all of those personal training sessions were for that he spent his money on last month.

“Well whenever I trained with the personal trainer it was great and I felt myself getting somewhere but once I had left him he was no longer around to get the most out of me” she said.

Look at the two comments above you in red, do they stand out?

Don’t worry if they don’t because I am about to tell you why!!

THE ONLY PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR SUCCESS IS YOU.

You are the only person who can stand up and take yourself in the direction that you want. A guru or coach CANNOT do it for you even if they had a burning desire to do so!! They can help you out, they can show you what worked for them and they can pick you up when the going gets tough but that’s it…

In Story A David had his ‘hopes set’ on his mentor making him money! It isn’t gonna happen David. The only person who can make David money is…… DAVID!!

The same rule applies in story B. Vicky will NEVER have toned legs and a flat stomach because she is relying on her personal trainer to do the work for her and achieve her goals. The personal trainer has ALREADY GOT her flat stomach and legs and guess what? It was most definitely down to working hard!

In online marketing it can be extremely easy to claim that you know it all and that you are a mentor, we know this. But lets not lose sight of the fact that a mentor only stands for so much. Us ‘Mentors’ are merely fitness trainers, helping others with the knowledge, giving them structure and a plan and then motivating them to hit their goals.

The rest is down to you! If you can follow what I am about to say you are going to be extremely successful in life:

FIND SOMETHING THAT WORKS FOR SOMEONE AND IMPLEMENT IT YOURSELF… WITH EFFORT.

And that is the key word in that phrase ‘EFFORT’ Now lets add the word ‘Intelligent’ to it and what do we have?

INTELLIGENT EFFORT

Now let’s throw ‘PERSISTANCE’ into the pot and what do we have?

INTELLIGENT EFFORT AND PERSISITANCE

You are now unstoppable.

Notice the word YOU? I didn’t say (Your Guru) is now unstoppable. I guess that’s the message I am trying to get at. In business, in fitness in any goal setting environment there is one message that rings truer than any other.

THE BUCK STOPS AT YOU

Take Karen from story B for example. (And I can sure as hell relate to this at some point in my life!!) What’s her next step?

Option A – Get online and buy some supplements to help her slim up, buy the latest ‘Davina McCall weightloss book and dvd’ combo and wait for them to arrive

Option B – Take on board what her personal trainer has taught her and work her bloody ass off to hit those goals

I can tell you now that it’s more likely to be Option A! It is human nature to shy away from hard work and instead, revel in the gratification that comes with a new purchase that will supposedly do the work for you.

You achieve what is known as a ‘psychological high’ when purchasing something but the fact is, 9 times out of 10… it doesn’t help the cause what so ever. It is merely something to deflect away from the fact that you are not working hard to achieve your goal!!

Let me ask you this question:

“How many of you are reading this having invested your money in an E-Book or a seminar or a course but as of yet, have not earned money?”

I’ll bet there are A LOT of people nodding their heads right now!!

Guess what… These products and seminars are USELESS.

There you go I said it.

Now you think I’ve probably lost my marbles completely bearing in mind I have made hundreds of thousands off the back of them!!

But here’s the kicker. They are only useless if you are not motivated and stubborn enough to follow it through and actually implement and work hard on what these things are teaching you.

BUYING THE BOOK ISN’T ENOUGH

ATTENDING THE SEMINAR ISN’T ENOUGH

So now you are clear on what is needed. The ‘Gurus’ do not make you money (They are too busy making their own money). YOU make YOU money.

Your Guru can give you a bike but he/she sure as hell cannot make you ride it.

For those of you who are yet to embark on our fantastic industry:

1. Find Someone Successful
2. Copy them
3. Review results
4. Repeat

How about that for cutting edge!!??

As you approach Christmas (Notoriously the toughest time financially) you have the choice to do something entirely new and life changing. While sat in a room full of new team members and beginner marketers it dawned on me yesterday that this time in 10 weeks ALL of these people will have put their hard work to use and will have seen fantastic results. Results so good that it will quite literally give them the best Christmas they have EVER had.

To join them or not to join them… The choice is yours but be clear on one thing, your hard work will determine your success and before you know it, you will have unleashed the inner guru in you!!

What Are You Going To Sacrifice??

I had a conversation yesterday with someone who, on the face of things, has a very comfortable lifestyle.

£50k per year job in marketing

Husband with 2 kids

Everything to live for.

Her problem as she described it, is that she is constantly working (With a normal day starting at 7:30am and finishing at 7:00pm). She leaves the house before the kids get out f bed and returns as they are getting into bed!!

She is also expected to get to the office for events on weekends and even had a stretch of 6 days where she wasn’t able to set eyes on her kids… whatsoever!!

So you can see her problem and you can most certainly see why she was on the phone to me seeking a life change!!

I asked her this simple question:

“How would you like to work from home, be your own boss, dictate your earnings and run your business using your mobile phone?”

Run your business from your phone...

You can imagine what the answer was, but here is where it gets interesting…

The answer was “Yes I want in!! How do we get started?”

So I began to explain that after investing in the training and home business opportunity, we will arrange a time to meet up for an induction and to get an action plan in place….

THATS THE SOUND OF THE PIN DROP I COULD HEAR ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LINE!!!!

After what seemed like hours….

“So I have to pay for this?” She replied

It was at this point that it dawned on me just what the problem is with people who are unhappy and feel the world is against them. They are not prepared to sacrifice anything to make the change they so desperately require.

You wouldn’t believe how many people I speak to who want something for nothing!! It seems to be a culture the UK cannot shake but one which needs changing if we are ever to rise from the recession.

Whether that change requires financial input (Most do) or extremely hard work (Most do) sacrifice MUST be made.

“Growth means change and change involves risk, stepping from the known to the unknown”

Here’s what I sacrificed when making the life changing decision to work from home:

- My earnings for 3 months

- Sold my car

- Moved back in with relatives for 6 months

- Reduced my outgoings by 75%

- Gave up my gym membership and stopped playing football

Now don’t get me wrong, these aren’t major sacrifices and people have to face much bigger decisions every day of their lives but the point I make is that I was faced with a decision to take a step back in order to take 5 steps forward and I had the guts to do it.

In order to join me, change your lifestyle and take control back you need 4 things:

1) To align yourself with someone successful who is willing to give you their time and work face to face with you

2) A full and in depth understanding of the making money process

3) Financial investment

4) Bloody hard work for 6 months

You have two options reading this email, you can either read it and take inspiration from the message within it.. think about it for a while and then return to normal life OR you can get off your butt, take action and place the wheels in motion to take that step back so I can push you 5 steps forward… The key to success lies in your decision.

I came across this story online and just felt compelled to share it with you. The message and positives you can take from this SHOULD spur you on to do whatever you want in life. It is about a wonderful lady, her name is Madam C.J. Walker and here she is:

This lady could have … Wiped the floor with the lot of us!

Here’s why:

First, the article in Hello didn’t say much about her except that she became extremely successful selling hair products door-to-door. All I can really remember is it had her picture and then it mentioned her success. Now, being a former salesman myself, I decided to check her out.

Here’s what I found:

First, she was born in Louisiana.

On a farm. In 1865. Not really an ideal time and place to be born if you’re:

A woman.
African American.

But she had plenty of additional challenges to face. She was an orphan at age seven. At age 14, she got married …reportedly to escape the abuse that she was suffering at the hands of her brother-in-law. She became a mother at age 17, and a widow at age 20.

She supported herself and her daughter by picking cotton on a farm, by being a laundress, and by working in a barber shop. From what I can tell, the most she ever made during that time was $1.50 a day.

But It Got Worse

At around 25 years old, she began to develop a condition that caused her to start balding. Can you imagine? As if she didn’t have enough to deal with …now the poor lady’s hair is falling out. (And we whine when our mobile phone drops a call every now and then… kind of embarrassing.)

Anyway …

Here’s Where It Gets Good

It shouldn’t surprise you that she quickly became a student of “how to fix this balding problem”. In fact, she researched all kinds of treatments, and eventually discovered that sulfur could abolish the scalp disease that was causing people to lose their hair.

(Apparently, people lost their hair a lot back then because they didn’t bathe as much. They would get some nasty scalp infection and their hair would fall out. But if you treated the problem with sulfur, you could knock it out.)

So she did the only logical thing to do, which was to start her own business …selling a product called “Madam Walker’s Wonderful Hair Grower”. Keep in mind, she was just starting out and didn’t have a big budget (probably NO budget at all) so she had no choice but to …

Go Out, Grab The World By The Balls, And Bend It To Her Will!

And the first thing she did was to go door to door, selling her product. Listen – nobody really embraces a door to door sales person with open arms these days, you know? But imagine what it must have been like for Madam Walker in the racist and male dominated environment she was working in back then.

…That took some guts.

How many times do you think she was rejected?

How many doors do you think were slammed in her face?

How many insults did she hear?

I’m willing to bet she even was threatened …regularly.

But did that stop her? NOPE!

Not only did she survive …she thrived. Mrs Walker hung in there and sold more products, developed new ones, and finally opened up a factory in Indianapolis. By 1913, she was traveling around the world training other women to sell her products.…And by the time she died in 1919 at age 51, she had become

The World’s First Female Self-Made Millionare!

Against incredible odds, wouldn’t you say? Did I mention that her parents were former slaves? So her story is amazing, and I think her success is largely due to one critical characteristic:

The Amazing Ability To Get Off Of One’s Ass And Get To WORK.

Seems we have a lack of that ability these days. Think about it. The real secret to success is to get out there and work like hell.

And when we think about Madam C.J. Walker, it’s painfully obvious that …

We Have Absolutely NO Excuse For Failure

Actually – let me rephrase that. In the beginning, failure is pretty much inevitable. A hole in one on your first round of golf is about as rare as an honest politician (Trust me I’ve had enough rounds by now!). I’ve been at this game for over 2 years. All day, every day – and almost everything I start takes a few tweaks before it works.

And some projects don’t work at all. Such is life. So yeah, failure is OK.

But here’s the thing,

You Have To Get Up, Brush Yourself Off, And Get Back In The Game

That is the magic power of the successful entrepreneur. Actually, there are really only two magic powers that I’ve seen – and these are present in every successful person I’ve met, worked with/for, or studied. Here they are:

Magic Power #1: The ability to get started.

This is a big one. I have spoken to over 2000 people in the last 2 years and the biggest thing I see plaguing the people who are struggling in life is the inability to get started. This really interests me so I try to discover the hold ups when discussing the industry.

People are stuck on trying to figure out what web host to use, what microphone to use, what email provider, and so forth. And look – I’ve been there, and I was broke when I was there – so I can relate. Most of the time all the research, the preparation, the making sure everything is “perfect” …most of the time that’s secret code for

“I’m Scared!”

Scared it’s not gonna work.

Scared you’re gonna look stupid.

Scared you might lose some money.

Scared you’ll be judged…

So let me help you out here and tell you right up front that …

All That Bad Stuff Is Almost GUARANTEED To Happen!

Your very first site is probably gonna look kinda terrible. (Mine still have that “made in 1998″ look). Google will probably “slap” your first ad campaign. And if they don’t, you’ll probably spend and “lose” a little getting enough traffic to test your offer before you start making sales and profits. Your sceptical friends will almost certainly judge you and talk behind your back about what a fool you are for trying to make money on the Internet. At least one of them will believe you’ve fallen for a get-rich-quick scheme.

Since you’ll be putting yourself out there in the interwebz for the whole world to see …you’re probably going to look stupid to someone. (And if you don’t, you’re doing it wrong!)

So …that’s that!!

And since you know it’s all definitely going to happen (barring some miracle), you can finally stop worrying about it and just get it all out of the way!

Magic Power #2: The Ability To Step Back Into The Ring

Business is like boxing in the sense that you will, without question, get knocked around a little. Do you think this ever happened with Floyd Mayweather and his uncle?

Floyd: “Coach? Can I talk to you a minute?”

Coach: “Sure, son. What’s on your mind.”

Floyd: “Well, I think I want to be a boxer.”

Coach: “That’s great. We can start training on Monday.”

Floyd: “OK. But …Coach?”

Coach: “Yeah?”

Floyd: “Do you think I’ll ever get …you know …hit? Like, do you think anyone is gonna …you know, punch me?”

Coach: “GET THE HELL OUT OF MY GYM!”

OBVIOUSLY this doesn’t happen…. In BOXING. But it damn sure happens in business. People get started and then just get floored by the first setback. It takes them by complete surprise and it makes them want to quit, I suppose it’s natural. But what’s not natural …and what really breeds success …is that ability to brush yourself off and start over.

Just like Floyd Mayweather (Bad example really as he has never been knocked down!!), you gotta get up and step back into the ring. If you do that enough times, you’ll be tough as a pit bull and you’ll start winning. And it doesn’t take too many wins before it all starts to add up.

But …….. if you don’t get back in there and take another shot …you’ll never win, and listen: EVERYBODY I know who’s achieved lasting success has, often on more than one occasion, been kicked down severely in business. Many have lost everything before they finally “made it”. Here are some of the times I’ve failed:

1. Football Coaching Course (Not enough demand)

2. Selling fake hair on Ebay (don’t ask)

3. Golf!!!! (SO many times!! I know this isn’t a business by the way)

…And of course, this is before I got online. Once I got online, I began to pour my money down the drain with affiliate marketing and an advertising campaign I had NO idea how to manage. And guess what? All those failures were HORRIBLE. They were embarrassing, and they made me seriously doubt myself and my abilities to carry out the task in hand.

…Getting back up and stepping into the ring again was hard, but worth it.

And if an orphaned daughter of former slaves can work her way up through the racist hardship of the economically depressed deep south of America…and become the world’s first self-made female millionaire …then what possible excuse do WE have?

Do you think it was easy for this lady to just walk outside and start going door to door? NO!

Do you think it was easy for her to keep going after hearing insults and rejections every day? NO!

But she did it anyway. Because that’s what it takes.

Now get out there and take what’s yours.

Scepticism: The Easiest Job In The World…

We’ve all seen banners on websites looking like this….

Of course, there really isn’t a home business that will reward you with $30k in 30 days. The problem is that people believe in hyping up their business or training until it becomes entirely unbelievable! What it should say is “Work hard at this for 6-12 months and generate upwards of $15k per month”

That’s a little bit more realistic isn’t it!!?? And highly achievable if you work with the right people.

It’s no wonder why we see so many sceptical people looking at our beloved industry and not believing it to be a credible one!!

NEWS FLASH – WE DO NOT ALL PRETEND TO OWN FERRARI”S, MANSIONS AND HAVE SWIMMING POOLS FULL OF CASH!!!

We, do however, earn an EXTREMELY healthy living and have something much more important than a prancing black horse on our car… Life Freedom. The ability to do what we want, when we want it and with the luxury of being the boss.

The biggest hurdle this industry faces is the scepticism held by people looking in from the outside. It is not their fault, they have just been misguided by overhyped websites and extraordinary claims of wealth. Check out my thoughts on scepticism….
